Teaching Minds – Training Hearts
Hillcrest Christian Academy’s original building, with only four classrooms, was built in 1926 by the Bethel Park school system and used as an elementary school. Some expansion of the facility occurred throughout the years, but the district eventually abandoned the building in 1980.
In obedience to a call from God to begin a Christian education ministry, South Hills Assembly of God purchased the building in 1981 and opened its doors to 70 students, from pre-school through grade six, in 1982. The original student desks for the school were bought at an auction, and cost only 25 cents! Teachers’ desks were “exorbitantly” priced at one dollar. Increased enrollment led to further expansion of the original building.
A middle school addition was built in 1994, when HCA began offering classes for grades seven and eight. A new gymnasium, with six basketball hoops was completed in 2007 and is where Hillcrest holds its basketball and volleyball home games.
Hillcrest began offering High School classes in 2010 and had its first graduating class, four students, in 2014. In 2015, the Academy began construction on a new middle/high school wing. The addition, which includes seven classrooms and a fully equipped science lab, will be the home of grades 7-12 and will open up more space for elementary and early childhood grades.
